quality control system for nuclear proteins in budding yeast that is defined by San1, a ubiquitin-protein ligase that requires nuclear localization for its proper function. In conjunction
with the ubiquitin-conjugating enzymes Cdc34 and Ubc1, San1 specifically targets mutant proteins, but not their wild-type counterparts, for ubiquitylation and proteasome-mediated
