The Center for Data Science is delighted to announce the presentation of several awards to its distinguished faculty members. Arthur Spirling, Brenden Lake, and Yann LeCun were each
recognized for their innovative and significant contributions in advancing the tech industry. First, we recognize Arthur Spirling, Deputy Director of Center for Data Science_ _and Associate
Professor of Politics and Data Science. Spirling received The Society for Political Methodology Emerging Scholar Award for 2018. “Spirling’s contributions to the field of political
methodology are impressive and broad ranging, encompassing scholarship, leadership, and institution-building,” said the Society in their announcement. Spirling was praised also for his work
in rapidly growing subfield of text as data, where he has emerged as a leading figure. Secondly, we congratulate Brenden Lake, Assistant Professor of Psychology and Data Science. The MIT
Technology Review named Lake among its 35 Innovators Under 35, highlighting the group as “visionaries.” In particular, the Review noted Lake’s work developing an AI model capable of
identifying handwritten alphanumeric characters based on pen strokes. His novel approach to machine learning has extended to speech recognition/reproduction and question formation. Finally,
Yann LeCun, the Founding Director of the NYU Center for Data Science and a Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences Silver Professor of Computer Science,_ _was selected as the 2018
recipient of the IRI Medal. The Innovation Research Interchange (IRI) has honored industry leaders with this prize since the award’s establishment in 1946. “It is our distinct honor to
recognize Yann LeCun, who has had a momentous impact in the field of artificial intelligence,” said Ed Bernstein, IRI president. “As a professor, researcher, and R&D manager with vast
experience in predictive learning, intelligent data analysis, and more, LeCun’s work has made a powerful impact on AI research.”“This distinguished award recognizes and honors leaders of
technology for their outstanding accomplishments in technological innovation that contribute broadly to the development of industry and to the benefit of society.” LeCun has been at NYU
