It's a catch-22 of sorts: schofield signs a one-year angel contract

Angel shortstop Dick Schofield, who had filed for arbitration, agreed to a one-year contract Friday that takes into account his blossoming talent and the No. 22 that he wears on the back of

his uniform. Schofield, who led American League shortstops in fielding percentage and batted .251, will receive $552,222 this year, the 22s being Schofield’s idea, attorney Dan Grigsby said.

“We were going to do this last year but forgot about it when we went to arbitration,” Schofield said. “The only thing we forgot this year is the 22 cents.” Schofield will also receive a

$25,000 bonus if he wins the Gold Glove Award and a $25,000 bonus if he makes the American League All-Star team. He earned $475,000 last year and had filed for arbitration at $595,000,
