"This sharing can be deeply healing and therapeutic, as it fosters a deeper understanding of one another and creates a sense of belonging."
A few weeks ago, I participated in a VA discussion panel welcoming new nurses to the Minneapolis VA Health Care System. The VA’s Registered Nurse Transition-To-Practice (RNTTP) residency
program is an initiative that connects experienced Veterans with a new generation of nurses, allowing them to learn from each other and strengthen the care provided to those who have served
our country.
The panel consisted of six Veterans, three women and three men who represented the Navy and Air Force. These seasoned individuals volunteer at the hospital, dedicated to giving back to their
community. The new nurses, some of whom were Veterans themselves, were just beginning their careers in healthcare.
For two hours, the room was filled with laughter, tears, and smiles as the participants exchanged stories and reasons for being a Veteran, nurse, or both. The atmosphere was one of
camaraderie and friendship, with a sense of shared purpose and understanding that bridged the generational gap between the older, retired Veterans and the younger nurses.
As the discussion progressed, it became clear that the military's core values of honor, courage, discipline, loyalty, obedience, and self-sacrifice echoed strongly in the hearts and minds of
both Veterans and nurses alike.
The discussion provided a safe and open space for Veterans and nurses to share their experiences and feelings. This sharing can be deeply healing and therapeutic, as it fosters a deeper
understanding of one another and creates a sense of belonging.
And it was evident that the military's core values resonate strongly with both Veterans and nurses, highlighting their shared commitment to serving others. The positive feedback from
everyone involved in the discussion underscored the significance of this event. It clearly had a profound impact on the nurses' understanding of Veterans' needs.
