Rebecca BrewinKalgoorlie Miner A local Elder says a cost-cutting exercise which would enable Aboriginal prison inmates to attend funerals by video link will create problems for local
prisoners and their families. Elder and Aboriginal anthropologist Kado Muir said attending a funeral by video link would spark outrage and offer no closure to Aboriginal people. “Anyone
running around with a camera at an Aboriginal funeral is likely to cause a riot,” Mr Muir said. “It’s completely insensitive. “There’s a big ritual involved in basically going up and paying
your condolences. A video link doesn’t do anything for meeting the social and cultural needs (of Aboriginal people).” The DCS recently announced a plan to reduce funeral expenditure by 50
per cent by cutting the number of prisoners transported to funerals and transmitting funeral vision to inside the prison. GET THE LATEST NEWS FROM THEWEST.COM.AU IN YOUR INBOX. Sign up for
