By Maria Saporta Three years, three summits. On Monday, Atlanta will hold the third annual global health summit — this year focusing on: “Health in Africa: the Unfinished Agenda.” For the

third year in a row, U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.) will be a keynote speaker at the summit — which will bring together many of the global health partners in philanthropy, government and

business to focus on issues where mainly Atlanta-based organizations can work together to address some of the world’s most pressing problems. “Each year I think they’ve gotten stronger and

stronger as more people inside and outside of Atlanta hear about it,” said Helene Gayle, president and CEO of Atlanta-based CARE. “For me it’s been really gratifying to see how it’s brought

different sectors in Atlanta together.” Wayne Lord, president of the World Affairs Council of Atlanta at Georgia State University, said there now are 20 sponsoring organizations that are

involved in helping put together the 2014 summit. Lord has been an inspirational champion behind the summits, but this will be his last one as a coordinator because he is retiring from his

day-to-day role at the World Affairs Council. Still, Lord is convinced that the partnerships that have been formed in Atlanta will continue to solidify. Gayle agreed that there is momentum.

“We’ve had consistent support from companies like Coca-Cola and UPS,” she said. “GE has gotten involved this year. Part of the real value is that we’re not just getting the usual players,

but we’re bringing other universities and members of the business community.” This year’s focus on Africa was a natural choice. Georgia Tech and several other organizations, are

participating in a yearlong Africa Atlanta cultural, business and educational exchange. And the health needs that exist in Africa makes it a logical area of focus, Gayle said. “Often times,

people living in African countries have been at the bottom rung,” she said. “We thought there was a great opportunity to look at all the accomplishments and incredible progress that’s

occurred. But also look at how health also is wrapped up in broader social and political issues. We will have strong and engaged discussions with many of the players in the room.” Gayle

added that a lot of the work that CARE does is to try to “achieve health equity in African by building new alliances and meeting new partners.” The “sold out” Atlanta Summit is being held at
