The Supreme Court on Thursday struck down the ban on the film _Padmaavat_, after hearing a plea filed by the film’s producers, director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and marketing rights holders
asking for withdrawal of the ban imposed on its release in Rajasthan, Haryana, Gujarat, and Maharashtra – all BJP-governed states. As news broke on TV of the apex court’s ruling, Surajpal
Amu from Haryana BJP was reported as saying “today for the first time I feel, the Supreme Court has hurt the sentiments of millions of Indians”. According to a report in _Business Standard_,
the petitioners had blamed the state governments for bowing down to fringe groups which wanted a ban on the film, and argued that states cannot unilaterally ban it since the CBFC had
cleared the film for release. Amu is the man who had last year declared a bounty on the heads of Bhansali and the film’s lead star Deepika Padukone, and also threatened to torch at theatre
that screened the film.
