There is a small body of literature dealing with the correlation of head ultrasound and brain MRI findings in ECMO patients with neurodevelopmental outcome. We retrospectively compared the
head ultrasound (HUS) and brain MRI findings with neurologic outcome at a mean age of 38 months +/- 16 months S.D.
Methods: Thirty-four patients who went on ECMO had serial head ultrasounds and brain MRIs in the neonatal period. The serial HUS were reviewed by an ultrasonographer, the brain MRIs were
reviewed by a pediatric neuroradiologist. Both HUS/MRI results were coded as 0 for normal, 1 for minor abnormalities and/or parenchymal abnormalities
