THERE is substantial evidence that blood monocytes are the immediate precursors of macrophages in inflammatory exudates1,2 and in the peritoneal fluid3, and that bone marrow is a potential


source of these macrophages3–5. In previous work using the chromosome marker technique, and in vitro cultivation of macrophages, it was shown that in mouse radiation chimaeras, bone marrow


is a source of alveolar macrophages and of macrophages which can be cultured from different organs6. This work also suggested that only haematopoietic tissues contain precursor cells for


macrophages.
