ABSTRACT BLOWHOLES caused by evolution of gas are relatively seldom encountered in cast iron. Recently, however, cavities evidently produced by hydrogen gas have been recorded1–3. The
surface of the blowholes exhibited a peculiar pattern of concentric circular waves or wrinkles. This pattern was imprinted not only on the graphite shell covering the walls of the blowholes
but also on the underlying matrix2. In the following some complementary observations will be given and a suggestion as to the formation of the structure is advanced. Access through your
