RECENTLY, Arnon, Allen and Whatley1,2 described photosynthetic phosphorylation by isolated whole chloroplasts; but chloroplast fragments were only feebly active in their experiments. On the
other hand, I have prepared a chloroplast fragment fraction which caused oxidation of Krebs's cycle acids associated with phosphorylation3; but this preparation was inactive in
photosynthetic phosphorylation. In modifying the preparative procedure, I have now obtained a chloroplast fragment fraction which caused disappearance of inorganic phosphate either in the
presence of citrate or in the light.
