stereotypical female characters of the past. She was tough, self-reliant, and capable. She also had enormous breasts and wore short shorts and a tank top.
In other words, Lara Croft was the embodiment of stereotypically masculine traits in stereotypically female packaging — giving gamers what was, I suppose, considered to be the best of both
worlds — a man they could admire in a sexy woman’s body.
The character was so popular that a few years later a movie was released starring Angelina Jolie. The Lara Croft character has since gone on to be a significant one in popular culture, with
additional movies, animated films, video game spin-offs and merchandise. The popularity of Lara Croft as the Tomb Raider is what paved the way for more strong, badass female characters and
superheroes in movies and television.
