SUBRAMANIAN SWAMY HAD A BOUNTY ON HIS HEAD, BUT HE MADE A DARING ENTRY AND EXIT INTO THE INDIAN PARLIAMENT. It is the emergency period in India. Opposition party leaders are either under
arrest or under exile. One man decided to go against the oppressive government. He had a bounty on his head but walked into the Indian parliament and walked off without being arrested. He
gave a new ray of hope to the Indian public. His name was Subramanian swamy. EMERGENCY IN INDIA: In 1975 India faced the biggest turmoil after independence. India was facing threats from its
neighbor and also threats from internal factions. Indira Gandhi was the prime minister of India. Her victory as a member of the parliament was nullified by the supreme court on the basis
that she used more money than the prescribed limit for her election campaign. Indira Gandhi declared an emergency across India in a daring move to save her government, citing security
reasons. Indian government dissolved all the state governments, curtailed civil rights, and declared martial law across India. The government also arrested the opposition party leaders. Some
of the political parties and movements were banned. Press freedom was non-existence, and it was illegal to write negative things about the government. Some of the opposition political
leaders went underground. One such leader was Subramanian Swamy. He used his influence and escaped to the USA via Gujarat. In the USA, he conducted propaganda against the emergency declared
in India and the atrocities committed by the Indian government. SUBRAMANIAN SWAMY: Subramanian Swamy was a member of the Rajya Sabha, the lower house in India. There is a rule in the lower
house that a member must appear at least once in 6 months and sign the attendance register. If not, the speaker can remove him from his post. Subramanian Swamy was on the verge of those six
months, so he flew to India on a pseudo name and stayed in his home in Delhi. He went to the parliament and passed through the security blanket. The house speaker was reading an obituary for
the members of the house who passed away. Subramanian Swamy intervened and asked the speaker to add democracy to the list. Before the security could arrest him, he disappeared once again.
Subramanian Swamy’s sudden visit to the parliament despite an arrest warrant on his name came as an embarrassment to the Indian government. His act hit the headlines across India, and soon
many thought that the Indira Gandhi government was not invincible as they thought.
