101 Freeway reopened after bomb squad detonates suspicious package

All lanes of the 101 Freeway in Woodland Hills were reopened Thursday morning after a report of a suspicious package was cleared, the California Highway Patrol said.

The freeway was closed for about three hours while authorities investigated a possible pipe bomb. Authorities detonated the package about 10:30 a.m. and reopened the lanes by 11 a.m.,

officials said.

A Caltrans crew reportedly found the suspicious device along the freeway near the Shoup Avenue exit and called authorities at 8:12 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

The incident was one of two major incidents on Southern California’s freeways Thursday. About 10 a.m., a tour bus reportedly carrying 40 people crashed on the eastbound 210 Freeway in

Irwindale. Dozens were reported injured and the freeway was briefly shut down in both directions.
