The wooden play equipment at Hurless Barton Park is still fun but is well past its prime. The 16-year-old structure--rarely spotted in daylight without kids climbing on it--will be taken

down next year and replaced with a larger model more suited to the spot’s popularity among local children. The City Council voted this week to pay nearly $20,000 to a consulting firm to

conduct a topographical survey of the entire park and draft new designs for a larger playground area to meet current standards for safety and the Americans With Disabilities Act, said Steve

Rudometkin, director of parks and recreation. The survey would ensure proper drainage of the expanded play area south of the community center, he said. The city is expected to seek bids on

the construction of the new play area early next year. “Our goal is to have it open by next summer,” Rudometkin said Thursday. MORE TO READ
