December 30, 1998 To the Ojai Valley Community: * With the loss of young Kali Manley, we have experienced a tragic event that shocked and saddened not only a family, but an entire community.
During this holiday season, our prayers and thoughts are now with the family and friends she leaves behind. On behalf of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, I would like to thank the
many Ventura County residents who answered the call to help in the search for Kali. From our command post and operations center, at Nordhoff High School, searches were established throughout
the Ojai Valley and surrounding areas. While the department has conducted many different searches, under a variety of circumstances over the years, this one will forever remain etched in
our memory. That is because of the tremendous response we saw from the citizens of the Ojai Valley and from other communities throughout Ventura County and beyond. We were practically
overwhelmed by the number of men, women and children, of all ages, who offered their help. Astonishment might be the best word to describe what occurred Christmas morning at our search
headquarters. Our staff arrived at daybreak to find more than 150 volunteers, ready to give of their precious time, on a day usually reserved for celebrations with family and friends. That
response speaks volumes about the heart of the Ojai Valley! I would also like to thank the many residents and businesses who generously donated their services and supplies to sustain our
search efforts. Your generosity made the job of all of the deputies and volunteers so much easier. While we have suffered a terrible loss, we have seen the best example of what community is
all about. Thank you all for caring and for what you have given, during this season of giving, to the family of Kali Manley. Very truly yours, Sheriff Bob Brooks MORE TO READ
