Finally someone came along, bought the Kings and had enough guts to get rid of a player with a $6.5-million salary who had 15 goals in 62 games to show for it. That’s about $318,000 per
goal. So much for the Great One.
In spite of himself, Sam McMaster finally did something right--he traded an aging superstar past his prime for young talent and a No. 1 draft pick from somebody else’s team. Finally, another
team besides the Kings has mortgaged its future for the quick fix that never works.
No matter how the Gretzky trade ultimately turns out, I look forward to a return to old-time Kings’ hockey, a type where the Kings score seven goals, and one has to ask, “Yeah, but did they
win?”
