The East Whittier City School District has appropriated $74,877 to help purchase new literature books to replace the controversial Holt series, which was sent back to the publisher in

November because board members said they received the wrong edition. The district is suing the publisher, Harcourt, Brace, Jovanovich, for breach of contract over the mix-up, which sparked

heated debates among teachers and parents who said the distributed edition contained satanic material. According to Assistant Supt. Ron Oliver, each school will be allocated $10 per student

to buy new books. The books will be selected by teachers and school officials from a state-approved list. MORE TO READ
