An unknown substance added to food prepared by inmates of the Madera County Jail made five guards sick--but did not seem to affect anyone else. County corrections Director Chuck Frazier said
guards began to feel lightheaded and then experienced stomach cramps after they began eating breakfast Sunday. One guard was hospitalized for two days. But inmates, who were eating the same
food at the same time, seemed to suffer no ill effects. “We found an unknown chemical added to the food,” Frazier said. “We do not believe this was a case of normal food poisoning.” He said
the matter is being investigated--and none of the inmates who prepared the food is due to be released soon.
