Two Marines were killed Wednesday when their reconnaissance plane crashed during a training exercise at Camp Pendleton. The dead were identified Thursday as Capt. Edward H. McDaniel, 28, an
aerial observer from Colorado Springs, Colo., and 1st Lt. Darrell S. Tipples, 36, a pilot who lived at the Marine base. Both were assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 39 at Camp Pendleton. The
men died instantly when their OV-10 Bronco crashed about 10:30 a.m. near Interstate 5, south of the San Clemente immigration checkpoint, a base spokesman said. The twin-engine, turbo-prop
observation craft went down as the pilot was maneuvering toward a communications site. Military officials are investigating the cause of the crash, said Marine Corps spokesman Sgt. Art
Alejandre. MORE TO READ
