SAN FRANCISCO — A breakdown in contract talks Saturday between janitors and the management of about 18 downtown San Francisco buildings could result in a strike Monday, union officials said.
A contract for 300 members of the Building Services Employees Union Local 87 expired Friday at midnight, but both sides returned Saturday for a 2 1/2-hour negotiating session with a federal
mediator.
“We really didn’t get very far,” said Local 87 spokeswoman Jean Quan, announcing a deadlock in talks with the Building Owners and Managers Assn. She said that the workers wanted to focus on
seniority protection and layoff questions but that “management wouldn’t budge.”
Mediator Jerry Finley is scheduled to meet with management and the union officials Monday. If a strike materializes, it will be the local’s first since 1937.
