Wales suffered a narrow defeat to Belgium in Thursday evening’s UEFA Nations League clash in Brussels – but Dan James gave Leeds United a reminder of what he is capable of on the
international stage, after leaving the club on loan. Belgium secured a 2-1 win thanks to goals from Michy Batshuayi and Kevin De Bruyne. Kieffer Moore did get his name on the score sheet in
the second half – a gorgeous cross from Brennan Johnson headed home by the Wales striker. It was a solid performance from Wales, who only introduced Gareth Bale in the 64th minute – and were
without Aaron Ramsey. James started in an exciting front three with Johnson and Moore and lasted the entire 90 minutes. The 37-time Wales star left Leeds on loan to join Fulham on deadline
day, with Jesse Marsch deciding he was not a part of the club’s long-term plans. But he gave Leeds a reminder of just what he can do, with a superb display in Belgium. WhoScored report that
he conjured up four key passes – the most for Wales, and second only to De Bruyne. His passing was also very good, completing 93% of the attempts he made. Of his six crosses, three were
successful. WALES DEFEAT TO BELGIUM BUT JAMES GAVE LEEDS REMINDER IN BRUSSELS Signed in 2021 for £25million, James was a player Leeds have tracked for much of Marcelo Bielsa’s reign. But in
his first season, he struggled for much of it because he was being played as a striker. He was covering for Patrick Bamford. It did not suit the pocket-sized winger. Despite hardly being
given a go in his natural position, he has been ushered out on loan to Fulham. Leeds placed their faith in Jack Harrison and Luis Sinisterra as their first-choice options out wide. But James
is only on loan. A lack of reports suggest the deal does not include a permanent clause. He could still have a future at Elland Road. His performance for Wales against a side like Belgium
will have given the Whites a reminder.
