The National Front leader, who took a shock lead in the polls yesterday, took to Twitter to condemn her opponent. She wrote: “Presidential candidate Macron goes to Berlin to do a conference

in English … poor France!” Florian Philippot, the National Front party’s deputy leader, claimed Macron’s decision to speak in English shows he “has no respect for our language and that he

doesn’t believe in France”. Macron, a centralist candidate in the upcoming presidential election, opted to avoid using his native tongue when he spoke at a conference at Berlin’s Humboldt

University on Tuesday, where he discussed his plans for European security if he wins the race to become France’s next leader. Macron’s own popularity has surged in recent weeks but he still

remains a long way behind frontrunners Le Pen and Fillon. Under the French election system, the two candidates who win the most votes in the first round of voting on April 23 will contest a

second and decisive round on May 7. This would be avoided if one candidate gains an overall majority in the first round vote, a scenario which appears highly unlikely given how close Le Pen

and Fillon are in the latest polls.
