According to the National Hurricane Centre (NHC), Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine is moving northwestward toward the Bahamas, following a similar route deadly Hurricane Dorian took. Tropical

storm warnings and watches have been issued for the region, with Florida advised to keep an eye on the system’s progression. At this stage, the NHC is expecting the system to strengthen

into a tropical depression or storm late on Friday or on Saturday. The storm was located about 140 miles (225km) southeast of Great Abaco Island, the region which bore the brunt of Storm

Dorian, at 1.30pm BST. Maximum sustained winds are currently at 30mph (45kmh) with higher gusts. The NHC has an air force reconnaissance plane en route to investigate the disturbance, after

which it will have a better sense of its progress. The NHC said: “On the forecast track, the system is anticipated to move across the central and northwestern Bahamas today, and along or

over the east coast of Florida Saturday and Saturday night.” HAZARDS TO LAND EXPECTED: The NHC has warned of “tropical-storm-force winds and heavy rainfall” across parts of the northwestern

Bahamas on Friday and Saturday. However, it added: “Significant storm surge is not expected in the northwest Bahamas from this system.” The system could bring tropical-storm-force winds to

parts of the Florida east coast over the weekend, and the NHC advises residents to monitor the progress of the system and local official warnings. Heavy rainfall is also possible across

parts of eastern Florida this weekend, posing the risk of flash flooding. There is a chance of heavy rainfall further north across the Carolinas. This storm poses a major challenge to

rescuers, searching desperately across the Bahamas for the 1,300 people still missing after Hurricane Dorian. The Category 5 hurricane killed at least 50 people, but the death toll is

expected to dramatically increase.
