UPDATE – 17:16 GMT Google says it has identified the cause of the problem. "Our team is continuing to investigate this issue," the US firm posted online. "Thank you for your
patience. We have identified the root cause of the issue and a potential fix is being implemented" ______________ Problems logging into your Gmail account? You are not alone.
Google's hugely-successful email service is experiencing widespread outages across the UK and US, according to reports from frustrated users online. Enraged social media users rushed to
complain about the outages this afternoon. The problems appear to be limited to Google for Work Gmail users, the California-based technology company has confirmed. Gchat conversations have
also been affected by the outage. Independent website DownDetector.uk, which monitors "when services go down or have outages", reported a spike in the number of people complaining
about outages for Gmail, which started around 3:30pm GMT. "911 my work gmail is down and I actually have stuff I need to get done ASAP," one Twitter user posted. Another tweeted:
"Chaos = when @gmail is down." Hundreds of Gmail users have reported problems connecting to the service, as well as sending and receiving emails. Others have been left unable to
load the login portal. Google has confirmed it is aware of the issues affecting Gmail users across the globe, and has provided a temporary workaround. Posting on its online Apps Status
dashboard, it confirmed: "We're investigating reports of an issue with Gmail. We will provide more information shortly. "Based on reports, it affects only Google for Work
Gmail users. The users are redirected to a page with 'Service not available, contact your administrator'." The US search firm has also provided a workaround that should solve
the problem for users. According to Google, disabling Gmail Service in Admin Console UI, saving the changes, enabling it once again – and saving the changes for a final time should restart
the service. Google first launched Gmail back in April 2004. As of February 2016, the free email service is the most widely-used provider across the globe, with more than one billion users.
According to estimates, a staggering 60 per cent of mid-sized companies in the United States were using Gmail. Gmail also became the first application in the Google Play Store to top one
billion installations on Android devices, back in May 2014. MORE TO FOLLOW
