inundated with flood water – several of which were in the East Launceston area, as well as Deloraine and Westbury, prompting authorities to open evacuation centres in North and North-West.
In a turn of events labelled “unprecedented” by the Bureau of Meteorology, the state’s major rivers – the North Esk, South Esk, Meander, Mersey, Forth, Macquarie and Derwent rivers – were
simultaneously placed on major flood alerts.
As of early Monday night, a total of 107 people had been rescued by emergency service workers statewide.
One hundred and forty-four TasNetworks customers went without power in the North on Monday night, along with 45 in the North-West and 2000 on the Tasman Peninsula.
Many schools and LINCs will remain closed on Tuesday.
The rain is expected to gradually ease on Tuesday, the Bureau said, but a strong wind warning will be in place for the North-West Coast, Central-North Coast, East Flinders Island, the Lower
East Coast and the South East Coast.
Between 9am on Sunday and 9am on Monday, many parts of the North had experienced well over 100 millimetres of rain.
Lake Gwendy, south of Mole Creek, received 241mm, while Pyengana, on the state’s East Coast, received 211mm. Major flooding will continue in the Meander River catchment overnight Monday and
into Tuesday.
“Strong river rises are occurring throughout the Meander River basin and the Liffey River. Strong and dangerous flows will be a hazard over the next few days across the whole Meander
catchment,” a Bureau statement read.
Major flooding continued along the North Esk River overnight.
The South Esk River at Longford exceeded the minor flood level of 3.5m on Monday night. Minor flooding will develop along the South Esk River around Hadspen and Lake Trevallyn during Tuesday
as strong flows move downstream from the South Esk, Meander and Macquarie Rivers, the Bureau said.
Trevallyn Dam started spilling water down through Cataract Gorge through to Launceston.
