student is the only newcomer in the 12 contracted players announced on Tuesday with two further spots likely to be filled by international recruits such as Heather Knight, Hayley Matthews 

or Amy Satterthwaite.

Launceston players Katelyn Fryett, Meg Phillips and Brooke Hepburn remain in the squad for next season with Julia Price continuing on as coach.

Price said she was pleased with the Roar squad but after a disappointing WNCL campaign last season they were keen for a more consistent team effort across the 50-over competition for

2016-17.

“Georgia has excelled over the last couple of years in the Sydney grade competition with the bat and that’s exactly the sort of wicketkeeper we need in our team at the moment to strengthen

our batting,” Price said.

“With only 14 contracts for the WNCL this year we had to make some pretty tough decisions and make sure we got the balance right in the team.

“Some good players have not been offered a contract but hopefully this will put plenty of pressure on those in the squad to perform at their best and ensure they are doing everything they

can on and off the field to drive the Roar forward.

“Last season we had a few light bulb moments which can take some time especially with a group that hasn’t had a lot of 50-over experience.

“But they are getting better and better with that and I am really happy with where we are positioned at the moment.”

Price said 50-over cricket remained a work in progress but they were trying to provide opportunities and pathway games for girls to play the format given that it was not part of club

competitions.

She said the addition of Redmayne as a left-handed, opener would fill a big gap in the batting order.

“Meg Phillips did a reasonable job for us but she is stil quite young and still learning so Georgia will be good for us in that position.

“She has done a lot of work as deputy to Alyssa Healy in NSW and is quite switched on tactically and as keeper will be able to assist our captain and vice-captain with field settings and

tactics and we needed that extra bat to strengthen our batting order.”

Cricket Tasmania general manager Andrew Dykes said it was good to retain a core group of players who had been together since day one and played a lot of cricket together.

“We believe the experience they’ve gained will hold us in good stead for next season,” he said.

“In the 50-over game we are developing and looking to get more experience into our players but we expect to win some games of cricket next season and be competitive in every game we play.”

Dykes said they had spoken to Hobart Hurricane WBBL recruits Knight, Satterthwaite and Matthews about joining the Roar but had to wait until their international schedules were released

before making some additional WNCL signings.

2016-17 Roar squad:

Erin Burns, Katelyn Fryett, Corrine Hall, Brooke Hepburn, Julie Hunter, Erin Lawler, Sasha Maloney, Mep Phillips, Veronica Pyke, Celeste Raack, Georgia Redmayne and Emma Thompson.
