OVER A YEAR BEFORE PRINCE HARRY AND MEGHAN MARKLE'S STATEMENT ANNOUNCING THEY WOULD BE STEPPING BACK AS 'SENIOR' ROYALS, PRINCE WILLIAM MADE A COMMENT THAT SIGNALLED THE END

OF THE 'FAB FOUR' 15:50, 06 Jun 2025 Merely a month after their wedding, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's relationship with Prince William was already on rocky ground. In a

bid to smooth over the growing tension, a summit was called at Kensington Palace in June 2018 involving both brothers and their wives. Yet, a stark two-word remark from William had earlier

hinted at the growing rift. Royal expert Camilla Tominey suggests that trouble first bubbled up when Meghan was announced as a new patron of the Royal Foundation, highlighting "how much

tension there was between them". The dramatic Channel 5 docu-drama 'Meghan vs Kate: The Meeting That Changed the Monarchy' features insights from Talk TV's Royal

correspondent Sarah Hewson about the crucial June 2018 meeting: "It was a late afternoon in June 2018, Harry and Meghan were heading over to Apartment 1A at Kensington Palace for

'clear the air' talks with William and Kate." William and Harry asked if they ever 'disagree' in old clip Despite the hopes pinned on the "fab four" as the

modern face of the monarchy, the resolutions of this pivotal discussion would deeply divide the royals. Whispers of Meghan's off-stage conduct, annoying a staffer at Kensington, and

Kate's disapproval of Meghan's alleged handling of palace staff were fuelling the division. Article continues below Royal biographer Andrew Morton has hinted that Catherine may

have felt "threatened" by the arrival of Meghan. With over 15 years as a successful actress, Meghan brought a confidence and outspoken nature rarely seen in royal wives, reports

Cambridgeshire Live. The bond between the brothers was showing signs of strain too. At a Royal Foundation event in February 2018 where Meghan was announced as the fourth patron, there were

signs of family strife. When asked whether working closely caused disagreements, William gave a resounding: "Oh, yes!" Harry concurred, remarking: "They come so thick and

fast. Working as family does have its challenges, of course it does. But we're stuck together for the rest of our lives." However, unbeknown to many, this partnership would not

last much longer. Commentator Sarah Hewson noted that Royal correspondents really ought to have picked up on the tension amongst the group: "Clearly things were not right between these

two couples". Tina Brown's book, The Palace Papers: Inside the House of Windsor-the Truth and the Turmoil, paints a telling picture of that public moment as a pivotal one. Brown

details how Meghan "fluently" dominated the interview, promoting causes that were commendable but sat outside the Royal Foundation's remit. It was "a fashionable cause

anointed by Hollywood and sure to make headlines," she wrote. "It was an awkward dynamic. It was later decided the Fab Four would not play onstage together as a band again."

She noted that Kate was somewhat eclipsed by her new sister-in-law: "When it was Kate's moment to speak, she was strikingly less articulate, as well as brief." Following that

event, the four would only make joint public appearances during larger Royal events like Commonwealth Day services or Trooping the Colour. It took nearly two years for Harry and Meghan to

reveal their plans to "step back as 'senior' members" of the British Royal Family, share their time between the UK and the US, and strive for financial independence.

William's sharp two-word response seemed to signal the commencement of a new chapter for the monarchy as we knew it at that time. Article continues below _MEGHAN VS KATE: THE MEETING
