Eurotunnel has announced it has reopened a 17-km section of the Channel Tunnel damaged by a fire.

Train operators have been running a limited service through the southern tunnel which was undamaged by the fire which broke out on September 11.

A statement from Eurotunnel said: “Bringing a 17-kilometer-long section of the north tunnel back into service will enable Eurotunnel to increase the number of trains running through the

tunnel to almost 170 per day.”

A Eurotunnel spokesman said the improvement would bring overall traffic to 80 % of the level before the fire, while shuttle services would run at 50 % of capacity.
