Apple to remove outdated apps starting next week

Source: Apple Apple's App store is about to get an overhaul. The company announced that beginning Sept. 7 it would review apps and remove those that are outdated, no longer function or

don't follow guidelines. The process targets apps that have issues like bugs or crashing when launched. For users that have already downloaded apps, the process won't cause

interrupted service, Apple said on its developer page. But for app developers who don't make the cut, it means they may have to submit an update to get reinstated for new users. The

clean out comes as Apple focuses its strategy more on services and software. Revenue from the company's services, including the app store, grew 19 percent in the fiscal third quarter on

pace to reach the size of a Fortune 100 company by next year as the app store hit an all-time record. Siri, which was recently opened to developers, is also of growing importance to

Apple's software, as users are expected become fatigued of app overload and look to messaging and artificial intelligence to perform more tasks. Apple is widely expected to release a

new operating system next week, which is slated to include updates to core apps like News, Photos, and Messenger, executives said at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference this summer.
